Great conquerors
During the 12th century the Mongolia Empire covered
most of Asia and became the biggest land empire in history.
It began when Genghis Khan (left) united warring nomadic
tribes and with an army of about 200,000 skilled cavalry,
ruthlessly conquered northern China, central Asia and eastern
Europe before he died in 1227. The empire reached its zenith
under the rule of Genghis Khan's grandson, Khublai Khan,
encompassing the vast landmass between modern-day Korea,
Hungary and Vietnam.

Traditional living
Many traditional customs are practised in a GER,
such as never treading on the doorstep or leaning
on the central posts inside. Most households have
a special plate for guests, and when offered some
dried cheese, a bowl of salty milk-tea or some airag,
tradition dictates that guests should accept all
offerings with their right hand.
